Short answer: Plan the holiday grooming rush now, in October. Many regulars on a four- to eight-week cycle who visit between now and mid-November will be due again in December, so every visit from today is your best chance to book their holiday groom. Five steps: list who is due, rebook at checkout, announce that December is open, send reminders, and run a waitlist.
Why should groomers plan the holiday rush in October?
Groomers' trade magazine Groomer to Groomer describes the holiday season as phones ringing nonstop, clients begging for last-minute appointments and a schedule bursting at the seams. Its November 2025 advice was to guarantee your regulars a spot first, because once-a-year pets will be calling around to get squeezed in.
The calendar maths makes October the moment to act. A dog groomed on 26 October on a six-week cycle is due around 7 December. If that client leaves without a date, they may call in December, find you full and go elsewhere.
What is the 5-step pre-booking plan?
| Step | What to do | When |
|---|---|---|
| 1. List who is due | Use each client's last visit and cycle (for example 4, 6 or 8 weeks) to see who falls due between late November and Christmas | This week |
| 2. Rebook at checkout | End every visit by booking the next date, including the holiday groom. Ask the client to repeat or note the date themselves | Every visit from now on |
| 3. Tell your whole list | Send one message saying December is open, with your last date for new full grooms, on the channel each client uses (SMS, WhatsApp or email) | Late October |
| 4. Send reminders | Confirm every booking at once, then remind 48 hours and 24 hours before | Ongoing |
| 5. Protect the slots | Keep a waitlist for cancellations, consider a deposit for new clients, and offer only baths or bath-and-tidy in the busiest final week | November and December |
In The Daily Groomer's September 2026 survey of 150 US groomers, 89% named automated confirmations and reminders (an instant confirmation, then texts 48 and 24 hours before) a must-have booking feature. Deposit collection (54%) and waitlists (48%) were rated nice-to-haves.
Do reminders and rebooking really reduce no-shows?
We didn't find published controlled studies on grooming salons, but healthcare appointments offer good evidence, and people miss them for similar reasons: they forget, or never fully committed.
- Reminders: a 2013 Cochrane review (Gurol-Urganci and colleagues) found moderate-quality evidence from seven studies (5,841 participants) that text message reminders improved attendance compared with no reminder. Text reminders worked about as well as phone call reminders.
- Commitment at booking: in a UK general practice study (Martin, Bassi and Dunbar-Rees, 2012), asking patients to write their follow-up appointment on the card themselves was followed by 18% fewer missed appointments than the previous six-month average.
Our inference, not a grooming result: reminders fix forgetting, and a date the client chose at checkout fixes weak commitment. You need both.
What mistakes should groomers avoid?
- Giving prime slots away first. A once-a-year client should not take the Saturday before Christmas from a dog you see every six weeks.
- Taking holiday bookings with no waitlist. A late cancellation in your busiest week becomes an empty table unless someone is ready to take it.
- Dropping the phone. In The Daily Groomer survey, groomers who did well with online booking still kept phone booking available.
Where does RevisitCare fit?
Steps 1 to 4 are the repetitive part. RevisitCare is an AI voice and WhatsApp front desk for pet businesses. For grooming salons, you set custom 30-, 45- or 60-day cycles, and it calls and messages each client when their pet is due, follows up on WhatsApp until they book or opt out, and lets them confirm or reschedule. It also answers incoming calls around the clock, and its human-in-the-loop unified inbox lets your team step in. You can start a 7-day free trial with 20 AI conversations and no credit card. Our 6-point booking friction check was written for vet clinics, but most points apply to salons too.
FAQs
When should groomers start booking holiday appointments? Start with your regulars now, at checkout, and tell your whole list by late October. Many pet owners wait until the last minute, when the best slots are already gone.
How far ahead should grooming reminders go out? A common pattern is an instant confirmation, then reminders 48 hours and 24 hours before.
Should I take deposits for holiday grooming slots? It can help, especially for new clients, because a missed slot in December is hard to refill. In The Daily Groomer survey, 54% of groomers rated deposit collection a nice-to-have. Keep the policy simple, put it in writing and mention it in your reminders.
What should I do when a holiday slot is cancelled? Offer it to your waitlist straight away, starting with clients who are flexible on time. Make cancelling easy, for example by replying to a reminder, so you hear about it early.
