Short answer: An AI recall system finds pets that are due for care but not booked, contacts their owners by voice or text, and books the visit or hands the conversation to your team. It works when you set it up in five steps: clean the due list from your practice software, write a short factual message for each reason, pick a channel sequence, set clear handoff rules, and track bookings rather than messages sent.

What is AI recall, and how is it different from reminders?

Recall invites a pet back for care that is due, such as a vaccine, a wellness exam or senior bloodwork. A reminder is about a visit that is already booked. Win-back outreach is for families who have not visited in a long time. Mixing them up means an owner who already booked gets told to book again.

Why does recall matter for vet clinics in 2026?

Most clinics already automate something, but few go beyond fixed rules. In the 2026 Digitail and AAHA study of 1,730 US and Canadian veterinary professionals, 61.1% of respondents in general and mobile practice described automated reminders based on fixed rules, such as time since the last visit. Another 18.4% reach out proactively but track who needs what by hand, and only 11% said their system recommends the right next step for each patient.

Demand is also less certain than it was. In PetDesk's 2026 survey of 400 North American practice owners and managers, 23% named "not being busy enough" as their top concern, and most said their reminder and texting tools had a neutral effect on no-shows and revenue. Overdue pets are often the easiest visits to fill, because those families already know you.

How do you set up AI recall? A 5-step plan

  1. Clean the due list. Pull pets due in the next 30 days from your practice software. Remove pets already booked, deceased pets, families who moved and anyone who opted out. A recall tool that can't see your records will call about vaccines that were already given.
  2. Write one message per reason. Keep it short and factual: the pet's name, what is due and how to book. "Bella is due for her rabies booster. Reply to pick a time." Add one plain sentence on why the visit matters if your vets approve it.
  3. Pick a channel sequence. For example: a text or WhatsApp message first, a voice call two or three days later if there is no reply, then a task for staff. Stop the sequence as soon as the owner books or says no.
  4. Set handoff rules. Anything clinical goes to a person: symptoms, medication questions, worries about a vaccine reaction. Decide who picks up flagged conversations, and how fast.
  5. Measure bookings, not sends. Track the size of the due list, how many owners you reached, how many booked within 14 days and how many visits were completed. Review replies weekly and fix confusing messages.

FAQs

What is an AI recall system for vet clinics? Software that finds pets due for care, contacts their owners by voice or text, and books the visit or passes the conversation to staff.

How is recall different from an appointment reminder? A reminder is for a visit that is already booked. Recall asks owners to book care that is due but not yet scheduled.

Do AI recall calls need client consent in the US? Generally, yes. The FCC treats AI-generated voices as artificial voices under the TCPA, so calls need the client's prior express consent, and marketing calls generally need written consent.

How many times should a clinic contact an overdue client? Two or three touches per due item, such as a message, a call and a staff follow-up. Stop when the owner books or opts out.
